Your Neighbourhood Guide
Petersham — Sydney’s Little Portugal in the Heart of the Inner West.
GETTING AROUND PETERSHAM
Study, Eat, Explore. Repeat.
From your front door you’re just a short walk to Petersham Railway Station — one of the most convenient Inner West stations. Trains run frequently along the Inner West line, reaching the Sydney CBD in around 10–15 minutes, making it one of the fastest commutes in the area.
University of Sydney is roughly 15 minutes by bus or bike, while University of Technology Sydney is about 20 minutes by train or bus via Central. Several major bus routes run through the suburb connecting Petersham directly to the CBD and Inner West neighbourhoods.
Daily essentials are also close by. Local grocers, bakeries, pharmacies and convenience stores line New Canterbury Road and Audley Street, just minutes from Castle. Larger supermarkets are easily reached in nearby Marrickville, Leichhardt and Newtown.
FOOD & ART
Sydney’s Little Portugal. Big on flavour.
Petersham has quietly become one of Sydney’s most loved food neighbourhoods. Known as “Little Portugal”, the suburb is famous for its Portuguese bakeries, charcoal chicken restaurants and family-run eateries.
Much of the action happens along New Canterbury Road and Audley Street, where cafés, bakeries and restaurants sit alongside vintage pubs and neighbourhood bars.
For something sweet, Portuguese bakeries serve custard tarts, sweet bread and traditional pastries that attract visitors from across Sydney. For something savoury, Petersham’s charcoal chicken shops are legendary.
The suburb itself blends heritage charm with Inner West creativity. Victorian terraces line quiet streets, while historic landmarks such as Petersham Town Hall and Petersham Park add character to the neighbourhood.
Just minutes away you’ll also find the vibrant nightlife and live music scenes of nearby Newtown and Enmore.
