FOOD & ART

Sydney’s Most Delicious & Artsy Secret Neighbourhood.

Dulwich Hill’s food scene is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets a multicultural feast of Greek, Italian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Vietnamese and Portuguese all packed into Marrickville Road and New Canterbury Road. Most of it is authentic, unpretentious and under $20.

For coffee, Goldie’s (429 Marrickville Rd) is the suburb’s most talked-about cafe, a Palm Springs-inspired all-day eatery with Mexican-Californian fusion food and one of the best breakfast bowls in Sydney. Small Talk Coffee (355 New Canterbury Rd) is a beloved neighbourhood cafe famous for Montreal-style bagels made fresh daily — the king salmon lox bagel is unmissable.

For serious bread lovers, Dulwich Hill Hot Bread Shop opens at 5am and sells out of its legendary sourdough loaves by 9am. Italian baker Luigi Carrieri has been baking here for over three decades — this is a Dulwich Hill institution you need to experience.

Stroll down Wardell Road and you’ll pass stunning Federation and Edwardian homes with bay windows, ornate fences and heritage facades dating back to the 1890s. The suburb expanded rapidly with Sydney’s tram network from 1889, and much of that character remains beautifully intact today. The Inner West Council’s “Perfect Match” street art initiative has produced over 160 large-scale murals across the area since 2014 — Dulwich Hill’s laneways are dotted with colourful, thoughtful works by local and international artists.
