Your Neighbourhood Guide

Camperdown & Newtown — Sydney’s most vibrant, creative and delicious Inner West neighbourhood.
GETTING AROUND CAMPERDOWN

Study, Eat, Explore. Repeat.

Camperdown 1/2/3 puts you right in the middle of everything. Sydney University, one of the world’s top 50 universities, is a 10-minute walk from your front door. UTS is a 15-minute bus ride, and the Sydney CBD is just 20 minutes away on public transport.

Getting around is easy. Multiple bus routes run along Parramatta Road and City Road, connecting you to every part of Sydney. Newtown train station on the T2 line is also within walking distance.

FOOD & ART

The Best Eat & Art Street in Sydney is Your Backyard.

King Street, just a 10-minute walk from Castle, is one of Sydney’s most celebrated dining strips. Vietnamese, Japanese, Italian and wood-fired pizza all sit within a single block — much of it under $20. It’s legendary for cheap student dining, with pad Thai under $15 a Newtown staple.

For coffee, Newtown is home to some of Sydney’s best specialty cafés. Campos Coffee (193 Missenden Rd) began here, Black Star Pastry (277 Australia St) is famous for its strawberry watermelon cake, and Brewtown roasts its own beans in a beautiful industrial space just off King Street.

For something more elevated, Bella Brutta is renowned for its authenticity and renegade toppings, while Continental Deli Bar Bistro on Australia Street offers one of the city’s best grazing experiences.

Newtown is also Sydney’s creative heartbeat. Murals line the laneways, including the famous “I Have a Dream” mural on King Street, while the Enmore Theatre — NSW’s longest-running live music venue — and Dendy Newtown cinema keep the neighbourhood’s cultural pulse alive.

NIGHTLIFE & SHOPPING

Keep Newtown Unique.

If Bondi is a morning suburb, Newtown is where people come after dark. King Street’s long roll call of pubs and bars has been crucial to Sydney’s live music scene for decades. Whether you’re after a quiet cocktail, craft beer from the source, or dancing until late — there’s a spot for every kind of night.

Craft Beer

Newtown’s craft beer scene is one of the best in Sydney’s Inner West. Spend an afternoon exploring local favourites such as Young Henrys, known for its iconic Newtowner pale ale, or enjoy small-batch brews at Wayward Brewing Co.. For a lively pub atmosphere with rotating taps, venues like The Union Hotel are local go-tos.

Cocktail Bars

King Street and its surrounding lanes are home to some of Sydney’s most creative cocktail spots. Sip expertly crafted classics at Earl’s Juke Joint or explore the moody interiors and dirty martinis at Bar Planet. The neighbourhood’s vibrant nightlife makes it an easy introduction to Sydney’s bar scene.

Live Music & Local Pubs

Newtown’s pubs are at the heart of the area’s live music culture. Long-time favourites such as The Courthouse Hotel, affectionately known as “The Courty,” offer relaxed beer gardens and weekend entertainment. Nearby venues like The Marlborough Hotel also regularly host live performances and events.

King Street Vintage

King Street is famous for its eclectic vintage shopping. Stores such as Route 66 offer Western Americana and retro fashion, while Uturn Recycled Fashion is a favourite for pre-loved designer finds. Spend a Sunday wandering the strip and discovering one-of-a-kind pieces.

Books & Records

Independent retailers thrive in Newtown. Browse thoughtfully curated shelves at Better Read Than Dead or explore the extensive vinyl collection at Repressed Records. These local institutions make the area a destination for readers, collectors and creatives alike.

Parks & Outdoors

Green spaces are never far away. Locals gather at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park for weekend picnics, dog walks and live music. Nearby, Sydney Park offers expansive lawns, walking trails and city views from its hilltop lookout.
